Biltema stocks several different colours of alkyd paint, so you will probably find a paint colour for your project on this page. The square metres per litre (Coverage) is stated under each product. This makes your planning a little easier.
What is alkyd paint?
Alkyd paint is oil-based, which gives it long-lasting durability and makes it suitable for areas subjected to heavy wear and tear, such as outdoor areas that are exposed to the elements. The paint is known for giving surfaces a hard, glossy and highly water-repellent finish. This type of paint has excellent adhesion to challenging surfaces and allows for easier application compared to emulsion paints.
However, it should be noted that the solvent turpentine, which is used in and together with alkyd paints, can be harmful if inhaled over long periods of time. Before use, read the data sheet of the desired product to find out what protective equipment is needed.
Alkyd paint is popular on boats
If you want to paint a boat above the waterline, alkyd paint is an excellent and very popular choice with many boat owners. The reason is simple. The end result you get when using the paint makes alkyd paint highly suitable for marine environments. The paint produces a hard surface, as well as a completely glossy and water-repellent surface, which is perfect for wet environments. Then you can safely sail off at sea in a beautiful and shiny alkyd-painted sailboat.
Alkyd paint FAQs
What is the difference between acrylic paint and alkyd paint?
A significant difference between these types of paint is that acrylic paint is water-based, while alkyd paint is oil-based. When working with acrylic paints, you don’t need to pay as much attention to safety and environmental considerations, unlike alkyd paints, where the presence of turpentine requires good ventilation and possibly the use of respiratory protection.
How do I paint with alkyd paint (Instructions)?
These instructions apply to all Biltema’s alkyd paints: Biltema’s alkyd paints must be applied with a paintbrush, roller or pad. The product must be stirred well before use and the surface must be completely clean and dry. The temperature of the surface should not be lower than +5 °C. Do not paint in bright sunlight, on hot surfaces, or in humid conditions. Ensure adequate ventilation. Apply 2-3 coats of the paint. The amount of thinner depends on temperature, ventilation and the surface. Use thinner that is intended for 1-component alkyd paint. Clean paintbrushes with thinner/turpentine. Can be painted over after 48 hours at +10 °C. The maximum time for painting a new coat is 6 days at +10 °C and 3 days at +20 °C. If the maximum time is exceeded, the surface must be matte sanded before a painting new coat.
