Fibreglass
Are you looking for fibreglass for boat care? Then Biltema has various types of high-quality fibreglass for you, whether you are a professional boater or an amateur. Browse our range and find fibreglass and equipment for its application.
What is fibreglass?
Fibreglass for boat care is a composite material made of glass fibre and hardened plastic. It is created by braiding fine glass fibre threads into a polymer matrix, which typically consists of polyester or epoxy. This fusion of materials creates a product that is both lightweight and strong. The lightweight and strength of fibreglass make it an excellent material for use on boat hulls. But it's not just its physical qualities that make it attractive.
Fibreglass is also praised for its superior resistance to rot and degradation. This makes it a durable material that can better withstand the harsh water and weather conditions to which boats are often subjected, compared to materials such as wood. Fibreglass can easily withstand minor scratches, but if you experience major damage, you can repair the damage yourself relatively easily.
Find fibreglass at Biltema
At Biltema, you will find a wide range of fibreglass products for different purposes. Regardless of your type of fibreglass needs, Biltema has the solution. At Biltema you will find:
- Fibreglass cloth
- Fibreglass mats
- Fibreglass tape
Fibreglass cloth is ideal for projects that require a smooth finish and extra strength, while fibreglass mats allow for more forgiving application on uneven surfaces.
Please note that our fibreglass cloths and mats are available in different quantities depending on your needs.
Fibreglass tape is used for repairing small areas or reinforcing corners and edges. These varied fibreglass shapes enable customised solutions for both amateurs and professionals working with boat repair or other fibreglass projects.
In our range, you will also find aluminium rollers with plastic handles that you can use to apply fibreglass.
How to use fibreglass for boat care?
Using fibreglass for boat care is a simple process; however, it requires care and precision. First, make sure that the surface is clean and free of debris. Next, apply a gelcoat that acts as a protective barrier and provides a smooth finish. You will then need to place the fibreglass on the gelcoat and smooth it out to remove any air bubbles. Once the fibreglass is in place, apply another gelcoat on top. This process can be repeated until you achieve the desired thickness. Remember to let each layer dry completely before applying the next.
Fibreglass combined with polyester
When talking about boat care, it’s important to distinguish between fibreglass and polyester, as they each play different roles in boat maintenance and upkeep, although they are often used together.
Fibreglass refers to the material that consists of very fine fibres of glass. Fibreglass is incredibly strong in relation to its weight, and is often used as a reinforcing material in various composite materials.
Polyester, on the other hand, is a type of resin that is most commonly used as a binder in composite materials. In terms of construction and care, polyester is the most common type of resin that is used with fibreglass to create what is often referred to as fibreglass-reinforced plastic.
In boat care and repair, the two materials are used together to create a strong, waterproof and durable structure. The fibreglass provides strength and flexibility, while the polyester resin binds the fibres together to create a firm, durable surface. Maintaining a boat made of fibreglass-reinforced polyester involves cleaning, polishing, and repairing damage to this composite structure.
Discover other boat care products at Biltema
Biltema offers a wide range of products for boat care, including epoxy, gelcoat and polyester, which are essential for the maintenance and repair of boats. Epoxy is used for its strong adhesion and waterproof properties, ideal for hull repairs and sealing. Gelcoat is a polyester-based product that protects the surface of the boat from water and sun damage, while providing a high-gloss finish.
Together, these products ensure full boat care, from minor repairs to comprehensive restorations, so that your boat can stay functional and shiny for years to come.
FAQs
Does fibreglass absorb water?
Fibreglass cannot absorb water as it is water-resistant. Therefore, it is an ideal material for use in damp or wet environments. It cannot swell, rot or form mould. On the other hand, osmosis can occur if water penetrates the boat’s fibreglass through small holes and damage.
How long does fibreglass take to harden?
Fibreglass can harden to a solid shape within 6-8 hours at 35 °C. To achieve maximum hardening strength, it can take 5-9 days at 21 °C. Keep in mind that mixing conditions and temperature can affect the hardening process and its efficiency.
What does osmosis look like?
Osmosis looks like small bubbles or blisters that are most apparent when the boat is dry. If you poke holes in them, they will emit a sour liquid with vinegar odour. Osmosis can easily be repaired by removing the damaged area and applying new fibreglass.
