MC batteries
In motorcycles, space for a battery is often more limited than in other vehicles. This means it’s especially important to choose a replacement battery of the same type, dimensions, and capacity, as your old battery.
In Biltema’s range of motorcycle batteries you will find various types of starter batteries for your motorcycle.
If you are not sure which type to get, choose the same type as your old one or speak to the staff in one of our stores.
Within our motorcycle battery range you will find our four types of starter batteries:
AGM batteries:
AGM batteries are powerful, vibration-resistant and maintenance-free, and work well for larger motorcycles, such as Harley-Davidson. In AGM batteries, the electrolyte is contained in an absorbent glass mat, which extends the service life as it can handle more charges and discharges.
AGM batteries can be mounted both horizontally and vertically.
Gel batteries:
Gel batteries are vibration-resistant and maintenance-free with lower self-discharge rates. Because the battery acid is contained in gel, it is more leak-proof than a traditional battery and is therefore perfectly suited to motorcycles and scooters where the battery is horizontal.
Lithium batteries:
Lithium batteries are maintenance-free batteries for motorcycles and have a higher capacity, lower self-discharge rate at standstill (even during the winter period), and lower weight than a standard equivalent size acid battery. They are often considered more efficient and more environmentally friendly, and have a charge indicator for monitoring battery usage.
Lithium batteries can be mounted both horizontally and vertically.
SMF batteries:
SMF batteries are maintenance-free normal batteries, based on calcium/calcium technology, with a liquid electrolyte in a sealed casing. The batteries are equipped with a safety valve to release any overpressure.
SMF batteries must be mounted vertically.
Would you like to know more about our motorcycle batteries?
If you would like to know more about our individual motorcycle batteries, you can read the attached manuals and other documents, which can also be downloaded from the product pages of the different batteries. The documents usually contain all the information you will need if you are interested in the technical performance of the batteries.
Recycle your battery
Old vehicle batteries are considered hazardous waste and must therefore be handed in to a recycling centre or to the distributor from which you purchase a new battery to ensure that they are recycled correctly.
Before recycling your batteries, we advise you to check which local rules and guidelines must be followed when recycling hazardous waste.
FAQ about MC batteries
Why doesn’t the motorcycle battery retain charge?
Once a battery is discharged, it does not absorb high current as easily. Even if it seems that the MC battery is receiving current, charging only occurs on the plate surface and the battery does not properly recharge. To solve this, the battery must be charged with low current for a long time, usually 2-3 days.
What is meant by self-discharge?
When a battery is not used, it self-discharges by about 0.5- 1% per day, which means that a little energy is constantly being discharged from the battery. The warmer the temperature, the higher the self-discharge rate. To compensate for the power loss that occurs when your motorcycle is not in use, the battery should be recharged every two months or connected to a maintenance charger.
What charging current should normally be used for motorcycle battery?
All batteries are different and therefore need different charging current. Generally, a battery is charged with 10% of its intended capacity in amps. For example, a 60 Ah battery should be charged with 6 A. Generally, a battery should be maintained with a voltage of 14.2-14.6 Volts.
How can I check the battery’s starting capacity?
If you need to test the health and starting current capacity of your motorcycle battery, you should use an electronic battery tester. The test must be carried out 4-12 hours after the battery is fully charged.
How long is the service life of a motorcycle battery?
The service life of motorcycle battery is normally 3-5 years, provided that you charge the battery every two months during the winter season.
