Uses of polishing wheels

Polishing wheels are used for car polishing to remove scratches, fine polish the surface, provide a high gloss and mirror gloss finish, apply wax and sealants, remove oxidation, and clean and maintain the paintwork. In other words, they are versatile polishing accessories.

Removing scratches and defects

Coarse polishing wheels, often made of wool or solid foam, are used together with rubbing or a coarse polish to remove deep scratches, swirls and other major defects in the paintwork. These wheels are aggressive and remove a thin layer of paint to smoothen the surface.

Fine polishing with polishing wheels

Softer polishing wheels made of foam are used to remove minor scratches and swirls as well as to prepare the surface for the final Paint protection. They are used with finer polishes or polish compounds to improve shine and provide a smooth surface.

Final polishing and shine

Very soft foam wheels or microfibre wheels are used to apply the final polish, giving the Paint a deep and mirror-like shine. These wheels are used with mild polishes to create a perfect finish without creating new scratches.

Applying wax and sealant

Soft foam wheels can also be used to apply wax or paint sealants. This provides an even coat of the protective product across the entire surface of the car, helping to protect the Paint from dirt, UV rays and other environmental factors.

How to choose the right polishing wheel

Polishing wheels, or polishing sponges as they are also called, come in many different sizes and properties. There are some important aspects to consider before deciding which polishing wheel to buy.

Wheel material

There are different types of polishing wheels, and the choice depends on the type of work you are going to do:

• Foam wheels
  Available in different densities and used for both coarse polishing and fine polishing. Softer foam wheels are used for finishing and applying wax, while harder foam wheels are used to remove defects.
  
  
• Wool wheels
  Wool wheels are very effective at removing deep scratches and oxidation. They are more aggressive than foam wheels and are often used in the first step of polishing. Take special care when using wool wheels when polishing as they quickly create a high heat build-up, which can burn the paint on the car.
  
  
• Microfibre wheels
  Microfibre wheels combine the efficiency of wool and the gentleness of foam. They are great for removing medium-sized defects and providing a brilliant finish.

Wheels come in different hardnesses, which are usually indicated by colour coding. Harder wheels are more aggressive and are used to remove deep scratches and defects, while softer wheels are used for fine polishing and a shiny finish.

How do I maintain the polishing wheels?

Choose wheels that are easy to clean and maintain. After each use, the wheels should be thoroughly cleaned to remove polish and paint residues. Doing so will extend their service life and maintain their performance. Polishing wheels can be hand washed in slightly soapy lukewarm water. You can also leave them in lukewarm water with alkaline degreaser before washing them.
