Preparatory work before applying wood oil
Before you apply your wood oil, there is some preparatory work that needs to be done. Keep in mind that you should not oil a brand-new wood surface; it can be left untreated for one season.
- Start by brushing off leaves and other dirt from the surface. If the surface has been previously painted with paint or varnish, this must be sanded off.
- Then wash the surface clean with deck cleaner. Deck cleaner dissolves stubborn dirt and bleaches discolouration and stains.
- If your wood has been left untreated for a long time, you should sand it with sandpaper. But make sure to brush off the sanding dust.
- Ensure that the surface is fully dry before applying the wood oil.
Good to keep in mind when painting with wood oil
The easiest way to apply the wood oil is by using a brush or cloth. Work the oil into the wood and then wipe off any excess. Then allow the oil to dry. Instructions and tips on how to apply your specific wood oil can be found on the can.
You should check the weather before you decide to oil your wooden deck or outdoor furniture. An optimal temperature is between 10-25 °C, and there should be little risk of rain when you start oiling.
If it does rain within 24 hours after you have oiled the wood, you should wipe the wood with a cloth to avoid white stains from the rain.

What is the difference between wood oil and glaze?
The main difference is that wood oil penetrates the wood and forms a moisture-repellent surface, whereas glaze settles as a protective layer on top of the wood. Unlike wood oil, there is a risk that glaze will flake off after a while. However, wood oil does not last as long glaze and needs to be maintained more frequently.
