Seed FAQs
What soil should I use when planting seeds?
Seeding soil is preferable because the seeds can germinate in it more easily. You can also use potting soil, but sometimes the seeds germinate more slowly in it because it is so nutritious.
What type of planting pots should I use?
You should use pots that retain moisture well, such as small plastic grow pots. You can also plant your seeds in a planter box.
When can I plant my seeds?
You should always follow the planting instructions on the seed packet. Most seeds thrive best when pre-sprouted in March and April. Remember not to sow too early in the year, otherwise the plants may become small and rickety. Some seeds with a long sprouting time may need to be sown as early as January or February.
Why do I need to pre-sprout some seeds?
The seeds that have a long development time need to be pre-sprouted to give them time to flower and to be harvested during the summer. The seed packet will state whether the seeds need to be pre-sprouted.
When should I replant my seeds?
It’s time to move the plants when they get too big for their seed pots. They should be transplanted, i.e. moved to larger pots. About 2-3 weeks after transplanting, you can start feeding the plants fertiliser and nutrients.
How long does it take for seeds to start germinating?
It depends on the seeds you have planted. For the seeds to germinate properly, it is important that the soil has the right temperature and that it is sufficiently moist. For example, beans germinate in 6 to 10 days in warm soil. Read the seed packet for more information about your particular seeds.
