Mobile in the car? What you need to consider
Can I use my mobile phone in the car?
The use of mobile phones or other communication devices while driving has been prohibited for several years. This also means you are not allowed to hold your phone while driving. However, talking on the phone is not prohibited, as long as it is done with hands-free technology – and as long as your driving is not compromised.
The ban on hand-held mobile phones applies to drivers of passenger cars, tractors, buses, light and heavy trucks, motorcycles, off-road motor vehicles, etc.
Tips for your drive:
- Prepare what you can before you start driving.
- Use assistive technology that allows for hands-free use of your phone.
- If using GPS, enter the address in before you start driving.
- Let any fellow passengers answer your phone if it rings.
- Make calls or send texts before driving, or during a break.
- Do you listen to music from a playlist on your mobile? Make sure the list is prepared before you start driving.
You can be fined for using a mobile phone while driving
You may receive a fine if the police catch you talking on a hand-held mobile phone or using other communication devices while driving.

In addition to having control over your phone, a mobile phone mount makes driving easier when using the phone’s GPS. But remember to enter the address before you drive, so you can keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel when you’re on the road.
