Biltema Fondation donates 2 million DKR to KidsOR’s project to build the first operating room dedicated to children in refugee camps

KidsOR is a charity that works to give children access to safe surgical services. They work with local surgeons and their teams to serve hospitals around the world with the equipment needed to provide healthcare for children. Biltema Foundation is now donating 2 million DKR to KidsOR to finance the construction of an operating room in a refugee camp in northwestern Kenya.

The new operating room is being built in Kakuma Camp, which is located in northwestern Kenya. The camp was established in 1992 as a temporary facility, but has now grown to the size of a small city with a population of 197,000 people. With funding from the donation, the operating room can now be completed, allowing up to 1000 children to receive surgical care every year.

“This is a unique project where we will deliver an entirely new service for the sickest children in one of the most difficult to reach places. We know these lifesaving projects work and we know it will provide care for thousands of children in the years to come”, says Garreth Wood, co-founder of KidsOR.

Louise Wennberg, chairman of Biltema Foundation, is pleased to present the new partnership. “Protecting children's health is important to us at Biltema Foundation, and through Kids Operating Rooms we can do exactly that.”

A container with equipment has been sent to Kakuma Camp in Kenya, and the first operation is expected to be performed in early 2021. Read more about KidsOR here.
